For the first thirty years of its existence, the company we know today as Suzuki was dedicated to making industrial looms. While the company was fairly successful, founder Michio Suzuki believed in the importance of diversifying, and in 1937 kickstarted a project to design the first Suzuki car. Though the Japanese government declared civilian cars a “non-essential commodity” during World War II, Suzuki returned to vehicle production shortly after the war, eventually releasing its first motorized bicycle in 1952.

Though initially successful domestically, it was on the racing circuit that Suzuki motorcycles gained international attention. In 1960, the company took home 15th, 16th, and 18th place in the famous Isle of Man TT races. Only two years later, Suzuki managed to snag first place.
