Used Motorcycle Inspection Checklist

Buying a used motorcycle is a great way to save money. However, while many used motorcycles are in excellent condition and have a lot of life left in them, a few are better left to the scrap heap. That is why it is so important that you make a thorough inspection before you purchase a used motorcycle. Use this checklist put together by the experts at Vey’s Powersports to help you determine the condition of a used motorcycle. 


Outer Appearance

While the condition of a used motorcycle’s internal components is more important overall, taking a look at the exterior will give you an idea of how well the bike has been treated. If the front and rear wheels are misaligned, that may indicate that the vehicle has crashed in the past. The number of dings and dents can give you an idea of how frequently the bike has fallen. Deep scratches and stress cracks in the weld usually mean that the bike has suffered particularly hard falls. 


Maintenance Marks

Once you are done checking the exterior, take a close look at the used motorcycle’s nuts, bolts, valves, brakes, rotors, drain plug, injectors, carburetors, tires, chain, and throttle bodies. Gouged and misaligned internal components are a good indication that the bike is in poor condition and may suffer from performance issues. 


Get Down And Dirty

Examine the inside of the fuel tank to ensure that the metal is not flaking. Also make sure that the fuel isn’t black, brown, or full of white streaks. Round off your inspection by making sure that the coolant is fresh and that the air filter and spark plug are still working correctly. 


Mileage Check

Mileage can be a good indicator of how much more life is left in a used motorcycle. However, the mileage should always be understood in the context of what kind of motorcycle you are looking at. A sports bike and a touring cycle may have the same mileage but be in very different places when it comes to overall lifespan, so do your research about the kind of motorcycle you are interested in purchasing.
